I logged into the Blizzard’s game client to be greeted with fantastic news: the long-awaited Overwatch beta begins this Autumn. I will not say “this Fall”. That’s not a thing.
The game looks a blast! Is this the first shooter by Blizzard? I think it is. I know they spent a lot of time – and probably money – working on Starcraft: Ghost, but that never saw the light of day. The cool thing about Blizzard is that although the never create a genre, as such, they come into one and just redefine it. They did it with Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo and World of Warcraft. Look at the influence this company has had on the industry as whole. Every MMO tries to define itself as the “Warcraft killer” whilst copying so many of the features. I’m playing Old Repiblic at the moment and it feels like a reskinned WoW. I hope Overwatch has a similar effect on shooters – shaking up a mostly stale genre.
I really enjoyed their cinematic trailer that came out a while back. It kinda struck me as a “Hey, what is Pixar made awesome shooters” kinda thing. Here it is, for those who have yet to see it:
The gameplay trailer is just as awesome, if slightly less adorable:
I really want to try out Winston!
To join the Beta, you will neet a Battle.net account. You can go into your account management and set your beta preferences, or just go playoverwatch.com and click ‘Beta’ to automagically adjust those settings.
