Stromae’s Carmen, inspired by and drawing heavily on Habanera from Georges Bizet’s Carmen, is a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of social media. In the original, Carmen sings that “Love is a wild bird that no one can tame.” In Stromae’s modern interpretation, the metaphor is adapted to refer not to love, but to social media in the form of a blue bird that grows bigger and bigger, more and more overbearing and all-consuming.
