There’s a fantastic book bundle up on Humble Bundle just now which features one of my favourite RPGs, Vampire: The Masquerade. It’s certainly a lot less pink than the last Humble Book Bundle I featured…
As is normal with these bundle, the offerings are split across several tiers that are unlocked at a certain spending level. The first tier is the real meat of this bundle, as it features the core rule book to the revised edition of Vampire: The Masquerade:
In addition to the core book, which is a fantastic product full of rules, background and fantastic artwork, this tier also includes the Guide to the Camarilla. The Camarilla is the main player faction in this game and the guide provides a more detailed, fleshed out look at the nature and organisation of this faction. It also adds in more playable types (bloodlines) of vampires and has a huge amount of background information. The remaining four books in this bundle are Clanbooks. Clanbooks take one of the specific vampire clans and provides a lot of information about who they are and how they operate. They tell you about some famous members of the clan and give you rules for special powers unique to (or more common within) the specific clan. The four clans chosen for this tiers are the clans that I think are the easiest to portray in-game. They are the more flexible clans that do not demand a specific, restrictive playstyle. They also all belong to the Camarilla faction.
The second tier delves a little deeper into the game, particularly with the inclusion of the Storyteller’s Handbook:
The Storyteller‘s Handbook provides copious advice to the storyteller (GM) on running a Vampire: The Masquerade game. It also gives a couple more bloodlines to use. The Guide to the Sabbat gives background on the main (usually) antagonist faction. Like the Guide to the Camarilla it provides new rules, background and bloodlines. There are a further five Clanbooks in this tier, of which three – the Gangrel, Malkavian and Tremere – are the remaining clans that are part of the Camarilla. The remaining two books – the Lasombra and Tzimisce – are the main clans of The Sabbat. Again, Clanbooks provide loads of background and rules, specific to each clan. The final title in this bundle is The Book of Nod, a book consisting entirely of background material. This is supposed to represent a collection of texts that are considered sacred to vampires of The Sabbat.
The third tier rounds out the last of the Clanbooks and also includes a couple of other little treats:
The final book tier includes a further four Clanbooks that represent the remaining four major vampire clans. These clans are all considered independent and do not claim membership of either major faction. This tier also includes the Guide to the Anarchs, the last of the guide books. The Anarchs are a more loosely organised faction of vampires from a mixture of clans who object to the eternal political machinations of elder vampires. It makes for an interesting read, looking at vampires who don’t buy into the struggle between the two major factions and want to carve their own path. I find Mind’s Eye Theatre to be an interesting inclusion in this bundle, as it is not so much part of the tabletop RPG line, as it is a set of rules for Live Action Roleplaying (LARPing). This lets you take your games of Vampire: The Masquerade to another level, acting out your scenes instead of merely describing them. This is not something I’m really comfortable with, but this was a pretty big part of White Wolf’s original fandom.
I’m looking forward to seeing what will be added to this bundle, as it states that more content will be coming soon, as is normal for Humble Bundle’s offerings.
There is one remaining tier that offers a physical product, in addition to the digital ones that make up the rest of this bundle:
A couple of pins to show off your fandom! The price seems quite reasonable when you take into account all of the books you get as well. They look pretty cool, too!
The charities supported by this bundle are USA for UNHCR (the United States Association for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and the World Wildlife Federation (WWF).
