In January, I set myself some hobby resolutions. We’re now into July, somehow. How are the resolutions going this year?
Well, it’s a mixed bag. Let’s take them on one by one:
Paint more! I don’t know a miniature wargamer that does not share this resolution, but I really need to make it work. I’m not even that fussed about what I paint. It could be Batman miniatures, Malifaux, Dystopian Wars, or whatever takes me fancy… just paint something.
This has not happened. I’ve not finished much at all this year. Oh, actually does spraying count? I’ve done some spraying! No? Doesn’t count? Ok, well, I guess that this resolution is going terribly, then…
There’s still time to turn it around, though I am less convinced that there exists the willpower to turn it around.
Continue to work through the pile of shame – particularly the larger, impressive-looking games that have sat dormant for too long. I am looking at games like Rex, Twilight Imperium and Merchant of Venus here.
This is going well. Two of three named games have been struck off the list and many more have also been played. Some of the games that have finally been played this year are Twilight Imperium, Rex, Among The Stars, Welcome to the Dungeon and Ladies and Gentlemen.
Good and getting better on this one!
GM some more RPGs. Being a player is fun, but I much prefer the role of GM, and I think I am better at it. I had a lot of fun with my Vampire: The Masquerade group and would love to branch out into new systems. This could be in person or online over Skype, but it needs to happen.
Mission accomplished with games like The Dresden Files, Dread and Paranoia. I want to do more, but I’ve definitely done a fair few games this year.
Not quite as successful as the previous resolution, but successful nonetheless!
Overall, it’s going well this year and I feel that I am prioritising stuff that I want to do. The painting is something that I will try to find more time for, maybe doing a little force for Infinity or some more Malifaux. Will have to see what I can do. The others are good, giving me a far richer and more varied – as well as more enjoyable – gaming experiences. 2016 so far has been a good year, hobby-wise.
