Fantasy Flight have announced a new starter set for their X-Wing Miniatures Game that ties-in with the upcoming Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens.
It’s exciting to see something new and savour the possibilities that come with the new movies, but I am a little unimpressed with this set – at least at first glance.
Yes, there will be new pilot cards and a few tweak here and there, but the new core set is essentially the same as the original one. I know that you really should have an X-Wing in there, what with the game being the X-Wing Miniatures Game, but I’d have liked to have seen some new models. The repaints do look nice, though:
Fantasy Flight have even made it very clear that although the factions are new, they are still direct counterparts to the original factions and may be used interchangeably. The Resistance plays the same as the Rebel Alliance and the First Order is just the same as the Galactic Empire. Oh, and Scum and Villainy are, as ever, Scum and Villainy.
The new set is cool, it really is, but it’s not much of a departure and, for established players, it only really represents a nice set of repaints to add a bit of variety to the existing sets. I have high hopes for what comes next from these The Force Awakens tie-ins, but this first set doesn’t do much to build on those expectations.
